What happened to Valentine’s Day?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Next sunday is Valentine’s Day. In my early teens that didn’t mean alot. You would send a card to a secret love or do something special with the person you cared most about. Then came the special cards, presents, holiday packages and so on. People setting up elaborate dates. Advertisers portraying you as a sort of social outcast if you don’t send out cards or give presents to everyone you care about. So what happened?

As it was with Christmas, Easter or any other holiday commercialization happened. Retailers saw an opportunity to make an extra buck and jumped on it. They turned Valentine’s Day into a day where it’s essential that you send everyone you care about something special. And oh yeah, they have just the thing for it.

The true meaning of the day (celebrating love and affection between intimate companions) got lost because of it. And that is unfortunate because the love between 2 people should be celebrated.

On the other hand, if you only show someone you care about them on one day of the year, you’re doing something wrong. If you love someone, show them through your actions during the entire year. Not just by sending them a card on February 14th.
