It seems that week after week more foods we eat on a daily basis are deemed dangerous by the various research that’s being done. Just last week it was announced that eating ham or salami increases the risk of cancer. Fish can contain mercury. Chicken meat can contain salmonella. And it’s been known for years that eating red meat or fast food is not the most healthy choice.
And it’s not just food that threatens your health. Cellphones are either dangerous or not. Asbestos that has been used decades ago as insulation for housing has been proven to cause some serious illnesses. The magnetic fields created by power lines might be dangerous.
You can’t read a newspaper, surf the web or look at the news without hearing about some new danger that has popped up. Things you have taken for granted for years or have been part of your living environment are safe one day but hazardous the next. So how do you deal with this? Should you crawl up into a ball and stay under the covers of your bed to protect yourselves from all the dangers of the world? Of course not.
The world has all kinds of dangers, but to shy away from it would be a mistake. Life needs to be lived and if you stay away from the obvious dangers (say crossing a busy highway blindfolded or eat fish that’s been caught in a polluted lake) you have a very good chance of living a long and healthy life. And taking a little risk or getting out of your comfort zone every now and then even makes it a better experience. All you really have to do is use common sense.
