If there’s anyone who can talk about the difference in jobs, it’s Mike Rowe. He is the presenter of Dirty Jobs, a show on the Discovery Channel. For those not in the know, on the show Mike spends a day doing all kinds of jobs with one similarity: you get filthy. Mix that premise with his unique and humorous presenting style and you get a very entertaining show.
Here’s the video of his presentation on the 2008 Entertainment Gathering conference. Besides bringing his wit and telling one of his stories from the show, he talks about the insights he gathered while doing his job. He makes an interesting case against the “Finding your passion”-way of looking at jobs, while sharing his theory on why we declared war on the kind of work he shows on tv.
He does have a valid point: manual labor needs to get the credit that it’s due.
